Crosshill First to get New Play Equipment!

All communities with play parks have been working with NCCBC and South Ayrshire Council to decide what new equipment they should install using money from the joint funding programme.

Unfortunately, the delivery times being quoted by suppliers were longer than usual for obvious reasons, but he good news is that work has now been completed at the play park in Crosshill, and the new equipment has already been very well received by the children of the village!

Hopefully, the other villages will follow very soon!

Developing Tourism on Our Coast

The ”Developing and Managing Tourism in Coastal North Carrick Report” is now available to view, and local residents and businesses are invited to read more about the plans and intentions for managing and developing coastal tourism in our area. The report – supported by the NatureScot ‘Better Places Green Recovery Fund’- outlines previous work which was undertaken by NCCBC and our coastal communities to create Development Programmes (https://nccbc.org.uk/development-programmes/).

The report focuses on tourism and changing consumer behaviours as a result of Covid-19. It gives data on current and potential future visitor numbers and discusses the strengths of our area, including our stunning natural environment, popular visitor attractions and proactive community groups and organisations, as well as discussing the opportunities for investment, development and growth in the coming months and years.

A steering group of people from Dunure, Kirkoswald, Maidens and Turnberry, worked with consultants to produce the report and they are continuing the work to implement its findings. A key feature of this may be to create a Tourism Forum that can link into the work of the Ayrshire and Arran Destination Alliance and the Ayrshire Growth Deal. The local Tourism Forum – involving private, public and community sectors – will develop the tourism product in this area and will enhance the “Shire Route” – one of 5 routes being promoted via “The Coig”, https://thecoig.com/about-us/.

To find out more about the project and other development plans in the area, you can contact NCCBC’s Development Officer, Stuart Lindsay via email on stuart.northcarrick@gmail.com

Maybole Charity Shop – Aiming to reopen by end of the year!

As some may already know, Maybole Charity Shop and the flat above it have now been purchased by NCCBC, and plans are well underway to repair and renovate the property and get it back into use as the charity shop that so many local groups rely on!

Survey and design work is underway with aims of having contractors on site during the summer.

We have placed an A1 noticeboard into the shop window (design shown below) to inform passers by of the upcoming improvements to the shop, and we invite everyone to spread the word that the charity shop will be back in action as soon as works have been completed to make it safe and attractive for customers once again!

New website for all things North Carrick coming soon!

NorthCarrick.com – one stop shop for North Carrick!

The new website for North Carrick is almost ready to launch and we hope the local community will be as excited as we are as we take the next step in promoting our area and all its attractions! We aim to launch northcarrick.com in the coming weeks when we can best support businesses to recover as covid-19 restrictions ease. The new website will provide residents and visitors with a full directory of local businesses; including all shops, cafes, restaurants, salons, pubs, accommodation, things to do, and everything in between! The site will allow you to easily find things to see near you, get key info like opening hours, locations and contact details. Our ‘business profiles’ will also link through to every business’s own website or social media channel so you can see their latest information, deals and promotions. The site will also detail links to local cycling and walking routes. The site will also play host to our exciting North Carrick Loves Local campaign which will also be launching soon.

We encourage all local businesses to register for a free profile via https://join.northcarrick.com/

We also have some supplies of hand sanitizer still available free to local businesses in North Carrick.

Recently Completed Projects

NCCBC provides funding to organisations across North Carrick – helping to make projects like those listed below possible! Here are just some of the many projects that have been supported in recent years. For a full list of funded projects please visit the Funds Awarded tab.

Crosshill Bowling Club received the sum of £3,926.41 to replace the existing worn-out furniture and carpeting and improve the attractiveness of the clubhouse in the hope of attracting new members. They hope to open their doors to visitors and new members when it is safe to do so and restrictions allow games and social evenings to resume.

Crosshill WI received the sum of £821 in May 2019 to deliver 4 single evening courses to promote the uptake of crafts and home skills to encourage more members and young people into the group.

The ladies enjoyed 4 successful sessions where they tried several new activities including floral arts, skin care, vegan cookery and Christmas crafts, while enjoying meeting some new members in a social setting. Unfortunately, further activities have been delayed due to current restrictions. The Group has featured in 3 NCCBC Newsletters.  This, plus other local awareness-raising action, has resulted in the group receiving donations with the expressed hope that Crosshill WI would be able to continue into 2021 and beyond.

RecoveryAyr received the sum of £5,000 in September 2019  to support the running of both North Carrick groups (the weekly recovery meeting and the Saturday drop-in group) until March 2021. In partnership with the local Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP), RecoveryAyr has been supporting the development of a weekly recovery meeting in Maybole, and the development of a drop-in project every Saturday. These groups, which were the first of their type in the North Carrick area, offer peer support (promoting abstinence) and activities, alongside training and volunteering opportunities. While both groups were based in Maybole they were open to anyone living in the North Carrick area affected by alcohol or drug use. The Carrick Peer Worker has continued to work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic providing much needed support via telephone, online and through ‘walk n talk’ sessions where restrictions allow. The Team have also been piloting online training courses which are open to all residents of South Ayrshire.

“As a person who was feeling isolated within a new and strange environment when I first moved to Maybole, it was absolutely invaluable to have a local regular support group to connect into. The group played a vital supporting role in my own recovery journey and helped me to gain a foothold in local community affairs and even now I need to pinch myself as I am now in a position to help others who are starting in their recovery journey. The group also encouraged me to onto college and become a peer worker” – Maybole Group Participant.

Maidens Bowling Club received the sum of £5,000 in November 2019 to purchase a lawnmower and a ‘Cub Team Sprayer’ replacing the current aged machinery for the purpose of maintaining the Bowling Green to a high standard.

Maybole Indoor Bowling Club received the sum of £4,185 to purchase 3 new short mat bowling carpets that are lightweight and easily rolled up and stored. The club serves as both a great opportunity for physical exercise for its members, and also a vital social network for people in the town. They hope to be able to meet again when it is safe to do so.

We will soon be updating our news page here on the website with more good news stories of how funding has helped organisations in our community. If you would like to find out more about applying for funding from NCCBC please visit our Contact Us page.

North Carrick Loves Local – Coming soon!

Alongside the work on the new website for North Carrick, NCCBC and Maybole Community Council are also launching a North Carrick branch of the ‘Scotland Loves Local’ campaign. Our area has such an amazing variety of local businesses and this project intends to really showcase what North Carrick has to offer to visitors – when restrictions allow – but also to remind local residents of the incredible range of products and services available right on their doorstep. We hope that this campaign, alongside the new northcarrick.com website and e-commerce platform, will help our local economy to recover and thrive in the months and years ahead. Keep your eyes peeled for our campaign launching online and around the area this spring, featuring some familiar faces!
